Well, I think finished! Thanks to some great lighting pointers from Richard
K and the fantastic idea of newspaper for the base from Matt (below) I think
it's finished - unless anyone has any other suggestions? I can't believe I
didn't think of newspaper! When I was making models full time I had a
separate room for it and used a couple of old tables so I guess I got
spoilt! :-)

Just something I would do. When I was a kid I used to put models together
all the time. I never did it straight on the table top. My mom would have
killed me for getting glue, paint, etc. on the table. What about replacing
the wooden texture with a texture of the "times". maybe a piece of
newspaper? Then lighting wont be that bad to adjust, you wont really have to
worry about the reflection of the table. The plastic is dull, so the
lighting really shouldn't reflect from that either.
Just a suggestion. I have the creative mind, just can't model things in TS
for crud. I keep telling myself that I have to keep practicing :)
