Alan,

I'm guessing the reason you have an image as a background shader is so that
it can be seen reflected in the chrome sphere? You just don't want to be
able to see the background?

Two methods spring to mind.

1) Remove the Background Effects Image Shader. In it's place use a Global
Environment Foreground Effects Shader with the image on. That way you'll see
the image reflected in objects but not in the background. If you just want
certain objects to reflect a background or even want different backgrounds
reflected in different objects, then drop the foreground and background
effects shaders completely and paint the objects with the Environment Map
Reflectance shader.

2) Render the animation you already have to a 32 bit TGA file sequence. You
can then use the alpha mask in the TGA frames to remove the background in a
video editing application.
