Rendering a mask 2005-01-09 - By Ed Baker
Back Two ways, first you can have only that object in the scene, and then render as a 32 bit Targa image which will come into Photoshop with its own mask channel, or you can render the object against the background or scene of your choice. Then paint the whole object white with the reflectance channel set to "Constant color" and render the scene against a solid black background. Viola! Instant mask! The second trick can be used in any 3D software.
Or get iPak, which will allow you to do multipass rendering in not only the mask, but shadows, reflectance etc. as their own layers or channels. :)
