TS7 Renderers 2004-12-04 - By Dave Angelini
Back Stuart,
I think all three will support caustics. I definitely know that Virtualight will and though there are different versions of Vray available, the Caligari announcement does specify that Vray will contain photon mapping....a key component to caustic rendering....so assume that it will also. Lightworks was announcing that they had developed IRR for caustics, but I am not sure if that is in V7.5 or still something in development.
But better than caustics will also be the sub-surfacing scattering techniques in Vray and the improved HDRI and shader tree capabilities of Lightworks. There also appears support for displacement mapping in Vray and Virtualout (whoohoo!!). So much to learn! Once again, Caligari easily outpaces my learning curve...leaving my skill set in the dust.
In fact, is there any rendering option that can NOT be found in any of the three rendering options? How about instancing? A glow channel? Or something nice and kitschy like Anamorphic lens flares?
Or for the real old timers out there, how about the real funky use of the marble shader in the transparency channel that we loved so much in tS3 using their very first rendering engine (what was its name?). Yeah! Bring that one back....NOT! ;-)
-Thanks, Dave Angelini
