Hi Ken,

I believe it is a matter of a couple of things.  Using the Fire
primitive instead of clouds, adding extra blank key frames, and
turning down the Fire Density setting to "0" to represent no flames
present.

First off, using the Fire primitive is the best way, I believe, to go
for a fire effect unless you have Julien's Primovol plugin.

The first two frames of the Fire Primitive on the timeline should be
the same, set at "0" Density when you want to have absolutely no fire
present.  Then the third keyframe needs to be set at the desired
optimum density setting for the fire (along with other levels set) at
the time that you desire for it to appear, let's say, at 10 seconds.
Afterwards, copy the same keyframe and slide it down to 14 seconds.
Then copy that keyframe again and turn the density back to "0" at
where you would like to see it turn off. Also, as a safety, copy that
keyframe and slide it to the end.

You can actually do this effect with 4 keyframes, however, you have
more control of how the fire begins and ends if you have the extra "0"
density keyframes at the beginning and end of my sequence.  Then you
are free to move the 2nd and 5th keyframes back and forth along the
timeline to get the desired look you want of the fire fading up to
your start point and fading out to your end point.

Please check out the DIVX AVI file to see what I mean.  Also I have
uploaded a CAR file for your convenience to study.  Please note,
however, that this was just a quickie example, so in order to get the
fire to really look the way you want it to, you will have to do some
tweaking.

Hope that helps some.  If anything is unclear, just let me know.
