I've never been a huge fan of the box-modeling method used for the
head tutorial. This isn't to say there is anything necessarily wrong
with the technique in itself, but it can be a difficult concept to grasp.

Personally, I prefer starting a head model from a sphere, moving the
vertices into place to shape the head. I've found that modeling from a
sphere eliminates much of the tessellation work of the box-modeling
method, and makes vertex adjustments easier to deal with due to the
sphere's initial geometry.

To do this, start by creating an 8-segment sphere and center it. Then,
rotate the sphere 22.5 degrees on the Z-axis to divide it into two
equal halves. Delete half of the sphere and begin molding the other
half into the basic shape of the head.

It may also prove helpful to adjust the interactive renderer settings to
use OpenGL with the lighting mode to "actual". This creates a high-
contrast view of your model's wireframe against the surface.
