Nothing, really.  The colors in the birth/death sequence are used only
in the preview of the life of the particle in the modeling settings.

Apply a shader to the particles directly, although you might want to
check the various plugins (Seattlemickey comes to mind) that may make
individual particle lifetime (what you want) available to the shader
tree.

Alternatively, you may want to do a color mixer with the particle
shader in the blender channel.  That's what it was designed for.
