-- --  I haven't watched the file yet, but it sounds like his object
must be created by cloning a mirror of one half and then extruding one
part, which is then mirrored on the other cloned half.

I agree with Patrick - when you use the symmetry option, you have to
turn on the "Clone" option - this allows any changes to one side to be
automatically reflected on the other side.
