I am also new to 3d.
I bought the books (Thomson course technology) at  Barns and Nobles
or www.courseseptr.com and the magazine ordered online or buy it at
Barns and Nobles to help learn 3d The magazine informs me of
software products and books out there it also tutors you on a
subject such as Getting started in animation in magazine
#64,65,66,67
