There are actually two networks involved here: the "external" one which you use to connect to Sprint, and the one in your house. Anything you plug into your router from inside your home is a local net, and you can set up static addresses on that net without affecting the dynamic address you use on the Sprint network. (The router does what's known as Network Address Translation, NAT, to make sure your local addresses are correctly seen by the outside world).
