Hi Dan,
in fact, Maya cannot read HDR images. However, Mayatomr will pass the HDR
image to an .mi file that will be interpreted by mental ray. You just have
to ignore that error message when setting up your shader network and render
your scene under mental ray as usual. Personally, I am using LDR versions of
my images until the last moment to have the feedback from the viewports and
replace them against the HDR versions only for tweaking HDRI lightning and
for doing the final render.
