I assume you converted the text to outlines in Illustrator. Select each letter
and release the
compound path (object -> compound path -> release), check how many paths you
have
(some typefaces are really messy), delete unnecessary paths and make compound
again.

You can also select the paths in the spline modeler and choose "combine as
compound".
