Not that I know of, you seem to have done everything right.  

However, a work around is to go to the render room, open that first
image as a sequenced bitmap file, and save it as something else that
is not sequenced,  not so elegant, but workable.  

Then import the avi (probably recommended format) file.  Even then,
it's a bit dicey to work with.
