Back Modeling in Blender is ackward, but capable (kinda like the VM in Carrara 3, but with better deformers like the lattice deformer). Hexagon, Wings3D or other modelers are usually a better choice, unless you are modeling in Nurbs (of which you should do inside Blender). Animating in Blender is really good and easier to set up because it suppost a visible means of weighting bone's influence on vertexes. Texturing and UV Mapping is pretty good as well, although you'll have to get used to it. Particles are considerably better and with the force and dampening tools, it can be really good.
I think it has built in hair/fur capabilites but haven't learned to use that yet.
Other features like the built in Game Engine and Python scripting; I do not know. I've never tried those before and haven't had the need to figure those out.
