If you're playing FlightSim games or similar, you'll notice that many of the
images such as plne uvmaps and decals  are in .bmp files but they may not
load in your image viewer. They're in special 'extended bmp 2000' formats,
using odd bit depths such as 5551 (5 bits for red, green and blue and one
for alpha) for a 16-bit color pixel, and there are a dozen or so formats
used, some 8-bit, some with rle compression etc.

Martin Wright has a nice collection of viewers (look for SHOW) and
converters to support these formats:

http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/

He also makes tools for DEM  based elevation maps to make terrains from.
And other stuff useful for flightsim expansions.

I'd call him 'the' reference when it comes to making addons for these games.
If you're using Carrara for making models or terrains and other material for
Flightsim you'll want to see what's happening in his neck of the wood.

Incidentally, he's also made two plugins for Dogwaffle to import/export the
formats recognized by SHOW.
Wowser.
