Okay, now I understand about what you mean by "lines". :)  It seems
rtestricted to the creation process though, as you pointed out...after
the object is created, they disappear.  

But if you go into the Preference Editor > User Interface > Rulers and
select "Quater axis", then you literally cut down the lines to one
half.  It doesn't totally eliminate them, but its a start. :)  

However, your point is well taken in that an on/off feature in the
Preference room would be useful for instances like this.

Well, I hope a few lines doesn't come between you an such a friendly
piece of software. ;)  See if you can give it another crack with these
new settings and let me know what you think.
