Thanks for the input Glen, I knew you could do that but I wasn't sure what advantage it would have, but I agree with your points. It would be helpful to have the null bone there when posing just the skeleton with the mesh hidden. I haven't experimented with IK enough yet to offer any tips on it, but I will sure try what you suggest. It sounds like a great idea if you can steer the wrist with IK by grabbing the null bone at the end of the hand. I will try it soon.
Also I think it would be helpful to place a null bone sometimes to help with asigning vertices to the proper joint. Say with the jaw, if you have the rotating jaw bone back at the hing of the jaw and then place a null bone out in the area of the lower teeth. Then Carrara would automatically assign many of the proper vertices to the null bone. And as you said it wouldn't matter if the vertices were assigned to the null bone or the "joint" bone.
Also regarding using a jaw bone: I'm thinking that I want to do most of the facial animation through the use of morphs. However I read once in the forum for Blender that many people suggested to still set up a jaw bone for movement of the lower jaw, that this was a help to give more realistic movement for some expressons. So since it's farily easy to set up I thought I would do that.
Live well.... -Jeff
