This may or may not answer your question but I can tell you what I do.
Generally speaking, I have Carrara render uncompressed sequential still images. Afterwards, I import all those images into a video editing program. From there, I use the video editing program to export a movie file with compression.
So far, the best format I have seen for movie files is Quicktime with a Sorenson 3 compression (I am going for viewing the file on the computer/internet).
I haven't figured out a good compression scheme for AVI's yet. I'm sure one exists but I haven't investigated that yet.
