Would you like to export 3D via PDF? 2005-05-24 - By steven_mcq
Back Note to all developers on this list:
As many probably know already, the U3D standard is open and extensible, not proprietary, so a programmer with the SDK for Carrara 4 or Hexagon could develop a plug-in.
I saw Adobe demo U3D through Acrobat 7 at the American Institute of Architecture convention in Las Vegas last week, and it was impressive. Having Acrobat as the wrapper solves the formidable business problem of distributing a viewer. I can't say the 3D quality was as good as the best I've seen from Viewpoint, but until Adobe buys Viewpoint, that technology is moot. The best business model will succeed, not necessarily the best technology.
I expect most Carrara and Hexagon users would be happy to have U3D as a way of sharing their work. Interactivity and animation is conducted via javascript. I see no reason why an animation set up in Carrara 4 could not be translated into a U3D javascript read by Acrobat 7. The ideal plug-in would simply publish the result as a PDF with the U3D model embedded and secure.
Currently, the foremost authoring platforms are from Right Hemisphere and Bently Microstation, and they are expensive. By itself, Deep Exploration is not so bad, at $150. But you would also need Acrobat 7 professional, which is pricey. Eovia customers would want to publish 3D in a PDF as a direct export, no other authoring required. The architectural emphasis of the Adobe/Right Hemisphere marketing would seem a good fit with Carrara 4 Pro, with its CAD import capability.
Here is the Right Hemisphere information on U3D and PDF, if you want to check it out. Someone on this list pointed out previously that Acrobat Reader 7.01 is required for the demo files. http://www.righthemisphere.com/company/links/solutions/Adobe/index.htm
