.CAR file format v3 vs v4

.CAR file format v3 vs v4

are the .CAR files supposed to be compatible between v3 and v4 Carrara?

I'm trying to load "wave caustics.rar" (one of the included examples)
from version 3 into a trial copy of version 4 and keep getting
an "MCException error".
