Tina,

I find that my favorite place to shop is the Dell Outlet. They sell
their refurbs and returns there. You often won't get exactly what you're
looking for and you have to be prepared to move fast when the right deal
shows up, but the last two machines I bought I probably saved 30-40%
over the best deal I could get new at the time.

The inspiron 600m laptop I got was spotless, the precision 470
workstation had a curled up sticker on the front. Both have the same 3
year warranty I would have got if I had bought them new. I don't PCs new
anymore, unless I'm building from parts, the outlet is just too
ridiculously cheap.

The Apple store sells refurb Macs for a moderate discount (look under
the red SAVE tag on the bottom right of the store's front page) and
there are other folks on the web (powermax.com, smalldog.com,
expercom.com) that sell refurbs or pre-owned, however I don't have any
experience with buying from any of those vendors to say they are good or
bad. The other vendors tend not to charge tax, but the discount is less,
Apple charges tax and usually throws in a copy of the latest OS so you
there is something to think about. Again the deals sell out quick so you
need to move fast if you find what you want.

The slowest machine I run Carrara 4 on the Mac side with is a ibook G4
800 mhz. It's fine for modeling, etc., I even use it for some
development work for plug-ins, but does show it's age at render time.

good condition?  When I lived in Charlotte, NC they would have an expo every
year of used computers companies didn't want after they upgraded, but since I
have moved back to New Jersey I never see advertisements for them.  Does anyone
have any info on them?  I would like to buy a used Mac and see how Carrara and
some of my other programs run on it for experience in both platforms since I
own a PC.  What are the minimum requirements for a mac for running Carrara 4?
Thanks.
