I get same problems you have observed with VS2..often all black when opening
.ai render in Illustrator...object all there but everything filled as black;
tho preview render in C4.1.1 is OK

I tried a single color fill and making the
object white.
Here is a jpg of that result in VS 2

The 2nd jpg is what the object looks like if rendered
with VS 1

I also noticed that when I render in average color I
get a black background and some of the objects change
color.
VS2 with average color but the floor should be
defaulft gray and there should be a larger circle
light blue near the cresent moon looking thing at the
bottom left.

VS2 with average color same scene but I changed the
color of the floor to dark blue and the circle to a
blueish green but floor came out black again and
circle is mute red.

The funny thing is in the preview Everything looks as it should.
