compositing help/virtual sets/camera tracking 2005-05-14 - By xanderc1
Back I'm new to Carrara 4 Pro, so I'm in need of some serious help from experienced users. I made a short film that's rather heavy on the special effects side (i.e. "virtual sets"). I was originally going to use Cinema 4D, but Carrara's price is so much more attractive and has some really cool features (terrain and sky generators are awesome).
Is there anyway to import video footage into Carrara so that I can composite the animation to match up with the video footage? The "production frame" doesn't do what I'm looking for. For example in C4D you can tell the camera to overlay the video footage and manipulate the camera to get the proper perspective so the people actually "fit" in the virtual set. Regardless how you manipulate the camera, the video footage remains at the proper scale. Is there such a feature in Carrara? I've read on this list that people import the footage as textures to apply to a flat surface, but if I do that, as I move the camera or change focal lengths, the object with the video texture changes perspective.
Also, is there anyway to import 3D camera tracking data into Cararra (video footage shot via hand held, pans, dollies or cranes will match up to the virtual set)? I got this great app called PFHoe from Pixel Logic that creates the 3D camera data and exports it as LightWave 3D or 3DS data, but I can't find a way to import this into Carrara.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
