Just a thought/possible solution???

I have not tried this but it seems plausible:

Using free program "Plant Studio 2", which allows one to grow various plant
types,
start a plant/tree, save file
grow it, save another file
grow more, save file
until you have enough sequences of files for your needs

Then in Carrara, at needed time intervals, replace the model with the net
file in the sequence.
Not sure how well tweening will work; may depend on your needs, probably OK
for cartoonish work.
Could be very tedious, but might be OK for a short time/few frames????

Then save output via VectorStyle? Or could be individual images and them
make a .gif movie.

Subject: Re: Grow a tree in Carrara
This is a very interesting problem that I've attacked using different
methods, none of them satisfactory. In my case, I'm looking for ways
to animate tumor growth, but the principles are very similar to tree
growth: extension along the apical bud, with circumferential growth
that does not extend the limb outward. In otherwords, if you drive a
nail in the trunk of a young tree, the tree will grow up larger with
more branches, but the nail will not be any higher off the ground
(though the growth will envelop it).
I've not yet found a modeler or technique that will allow this kind of
growth, including morph animation and the plant modeler.
The closest I've come is by using the metaball modeler and the spline
modeler. Both files are in a folder in the files room under SMcQ. The
renders are a little dark. Here is a link to one of them:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Carrara/files/SMcQ/combo-tumor2.mov
In both cases, modeling is extremely tedious. Hexagon might someday be
capable of this kind of animated growth, if the model progress could
be keyframed. That won't be possible until Hexagon is integrated with
Carrara.SMcQ
