Well,
the background element of the Scene will spherically map the image
around your scene, so you don't have to make a sphere yourself...
The backdrop will draw your image behind the rest of the scene, just
like it appears in 2d...

Now, for the shadows, you have to model the shapes you want to catch
shadows for, they don't have to be perfect though...
For instance you could model a table, and a chair and insert a plane
for the floor.
Texture them so that they somewhat matches the background image, and
set their lighting model to shadow catcher...
Now only the areas which shadows fall onto will render...
