Don't know if some Carraraers (?) are still using viewpoint.
In any case ...
The first quarter 2005 financial result of Viewpoint Corp. indicates
3 % of revenues from licenses (to Viewpoint creators). Compared to
7 % one year ago...
A simple calculation shows that about 170 000 $ were earned from Viewpoint
technology
licensing. Since the smallest fee for a license is 1000 $ (and can
climb up to 25000 $), than means that at most 170 people world-wide
decided for the Viewpoint technology during the whole quarter.
They were 250 in the first quarter 2004. Since license fee are
annual, that means that, actually, all in all 80 developers decided NOT to
renew their license, a shrinking of the user base of 30 % in one
year...
We can never tell for sure, but Viewpoint is probably closed to dead
as a web 3D technology (while revenues for Viewpoint Corp. increased as
the company as turn to an advertisement company...).
This is only my humble - and sad - point of view that can be usefull
for anyone studying web 3D solutions.
