Hexagon my impressions. 2005-05-07 - By nicholas8681
Back Looking at Hexagon many of you may look at it and see it as just another duplicate of other modeling software. Well to an extent it is. But it has many advantages over other software. (to me) One nice advantage specific for Carrara users is that you can model completely in Hexagon and then set up domains as you are modeling, and export to .Car format complete with domains intact.
If you aren't a Carrara user what makes Hexagon unique? Well you can compare Hexagon to an application like Silo, as it has many similar tools, but Hexagon has many tools Silo doesn't, like line tools. For instance you can create a object, and duplicate it along a bezier line, or move the object along a line using the align functions. The process of modeling a pearl necklace would be as simple as drawing the thread as a bezier line, to put the pearls on, creating a pearl, duplicating the pearl along the thread and then adding thickness to the line to create the width of the thread.
Most other applications also do not have the dynamic geometry of Hexagon, which you saw demonstrated in the boolean video on the Eovia website. To me I see Hexagon as having all the functions I loved about Amapi Designer, and then combining those functions into a much more user friendly interface along with blending in all the wonderful things you have seen previewed recently. (ie. edge extrusion, fast extrude, edge loop selection, etc)
The simple uv editing tools are nice as well, as you can quickly set up some simple uv mapping, and export to Carrara complete with the uvmapping intact, and further tweak the mapping in Carrara's uv editor.
Anyway, thats my two cents. Take it as you will. I'm going to post up a few simple tutorial/demonstrations of modeling in Carrara today, and over the next few days to wet everyone's appetite.
