I don't consider this off-topic at all, as it is very much related to
Carrara and the 3D market.  If you consider the pattern of other open
source products such as JBoss (application server) and Eclipse (Java
IDE).  In both these cases the open products do garner a significant
market, but do not replace existing products.  This is for a very
real reason.  If users are going to invest their time and learning in
a product, support and an improving product are well worth some
expense.  I do think that the open products will continue to bring
down the price of the expensive products.

Personally I'd like to see a pricing model which better reflects a
lower point of entry with various levels of paid support.  This would
encourage product adoption while giving users different levels and
types of support.  I believe open source will help move the market
towards this type of model.  The interesting situation that Blender
opens the door for, is an inexpensive commercial front-end to the
blender engine.  By not needing to invest in the engine, a small
company could produce an approachable interface resulting in another
low-cost, high value 3D product such as Carrara.  One thing is for
sure, it keeps Eovia motivated to enhancing Carrara which is why I
use it.  Well, that and it does most of what I need pretty well, and
some of what I need very well.
