Hey guys -

A few things to note here about HDR images -

First, you don't need multiple exposures at all, really, especially
from a 3D app. Photoshop CS2 can convert any image to an HDR image; the
catch, of course, it that you're not getting the "full benefit" of a
truly wide range of light.

Second, since you don't need multiple images, you can use a single 3d
render with good lighting and tweak it in Photoshop. For that matter,
you can create any image from scratch, or take a scan of a Polaroid
taken in a Poconos nightclub from the 1970s and beef that up... and
save as an HDR.

From what I understand, we basically have the need for HDR to
compensate for images with wide lighting differentiation where, for
example, you have bright backgrounds and dark foregrounds, or vice
versa; as demonstrated you could simply take one shot with the aperture
wide and another with the aperture tight (to properly expose different
lighting levels) and combine that, and this more closely mimics the
action of the human eye.

That said, there is still going to be greater value in carefully
orchestrated lighting environments for use in environments in which...
um.. you need... carefully orchestrated lighting  ;)

Hi Mark,

Thanks, Mark for the feedback.

RE: multiple exposures for HDR; the only technique that I have found
to be successful using 3D rendered images to create an HDR map has
been through Terragen (<http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/>), where
the program actually has controls to change camera f-stops.  The only
thing I noticed that was a challenge was that the program doesn't
compensate for the color of the sky (blue), so when I took the images
and put them together to create an HDR map, I always got a blue cast
on my images.  So I worked around this temporarily by creating skies
with a full grey cloud cover, and was able to get a decent HDR image
that I could then use in Carrara.

Cheers.
