Have you tried importing a lower-poly unsmoothed version and then smoothing in the Carrara VM using subdivision surfaces? I think you will prefer this option.

In preferences you can change the color scheme to something more subtle and choose a different contrasting background. Also, it helps a great deal to use specific selector tools: only vertices, or only edges, or only polygons. These are identified by icon in the VM. On a very-high poly model, the brightness of selected elements can obstruct the clarity of the local structure, but this is a function of magnification and screen resolution. Go in closer and the screen size of selected elements will be more proportionate to the vertices and edges of the rest of the model. Using multiple views, you can work up close in one window while setting another window (different camera) at a different magnification.

I expect Z-brush exports to OBJ file, maybe others. Have you tried the axis orientation options in the Carrara OBJ import dialog box? Other things you should check for: right-left reversal and normals inversion. You will encounter these issues with imports from various programs, as OBJ is only a defacto standard, not an official one. Everything can be corrected with the options avialable under Transform.
I don't know much about character rigging but there are a lot of experts on this list who can point you in the right direction.
The main frustration you are facing, sluggishness with high poly imports, can be compensated for by letting Carrara calculate the subdivision smoothing. If I remember correctly from the Zbrush web site, Zbrush allows working with poly meshes at various mesh resolutions. Experiment by importing lower-resolution versions into Carrara.
