Hello Mark,

Personally I think that Carrara is an excellent 3D package for the
mid-range market.  I may be a little biaised since it is my first 3D
package, but I have tried others and do curently own other 3D apps.
like Cinema 4D, but still I see Carra as my main 3D package.  For
instance, the only reason why I obtained Cinema 4D was because certain
things such as camera mapping and matchmoving can not be done in
Carrara, yet.  However, I am hoping that these techniques will be
something that will be looked into for their later editions.

Carrara is probably the fastest 3D package on the market that an
artist can get up to speed with and turn out high-quality 3D images at
the same time.  It has features such as photorealistic rendering, HDR,
and Physics functions (to name a few), that cost extra in other
packages, but are standard in Carrara.

You can also do animations with Carrara, including motion capture
(fbx) animated clips and sound in its Pro version.  So depending on
what your needs are, Carrara can suit them as well.  But there are
some techniques such as "expressions", that Carrara does not support
at this current time, so if you are used to working with features like
that, then you may have to explore another type of 3D animation package.

But honestly Mark, a user is really only limited in Carrara by his or
her own imagination and creativity.  Even though a package like
Carrara may not have features such as expressions, there are usually
some type of work-around to get what you want.  It may take you a bit
longer, but you can output high-quality, somewhat complex animated
clips with Carrara.

For instance, there is an animator named Brian Taylor who is using one
of the predecessors of Carrara Studio (Infini-D) for a short film he
is currently working on.  Please visit his site and see the absolutely
stunning work he is doing.  And it is all done on older software:

As far as modeling goes, Eovia is coming out with a brand new modeling
program called Hexagon, which will definitely be a plus in the 3D
modeler's gfx aresenal.  In testing it, I have personally found it to
be easier than AMAPI Designer for modeling and wait with great
anticipation for its final release.

So in a nutshell, definitely for the money and ease of ramping up to
speed, Carrara would be the way to go.  I wish I had more animated
clips to recommend to you, but the Carrara Films site (not affiliated
with Eovia) that used to host animated clips is no longer in
existence.  However, here are a few links to some clips that I have
been able to scrounge together:

1) Artist: Jack Whitney (Jack Whitney Studios) -
<http://www.jwhitneystudio.com/>

2) Artist: P. A. Roberts (Harmonique Films) -
<http://www.harmonic-uk.co.uk/>

3) Artist: John Aquino (hodgepodgestudios.com)-

_SPACE_DOCK.wmv>

4) Artist:  McGuiver (3dXtract.com) -

5) Artist: Yours Truly! :) [Shoestring Shader Site] -

I wish I had more to show you but these are the only ones I could
think of right off the top of my head.  If I find more, and if you are
interested, I can send the links to you.  Just let me know.

Well, I wish you the best in your decision.

Cheers.

Claudia
