Although I'm still a novice with Carrara, I have had similiar problems to the
one you
describe. As far as I remember, the low poly problem tends to be more dramatic
the
smaller the imported vector grafic is. So if you scale it to 400% in
Illustrator, it looks better
in Carrara. I'm not quite sure of this, but I think that solved the imidiate
crisis for me.
In many respects of ease-of-use Carrara is a big set back compared to Infini-D,
which in
example imported EPS at scene level, and adjusted poly detail level very easily
with a
simple menu choise.
