DEM files 2005-04-22 - By Marjorie Graterol

Hi I usually bring them as they are to Bryce's terrain editor (It reads DEM files) , then save as bmp and import them into Carrara map editor. However, I believe that Ground-control plugin -DCG- helps a lot, at least that 's what I've seen at the website, so ground control in on my list. There is a simple but powerful converter called Wilbur. It can convert to *.ter (Terragen) and even as a terrain tga, useful for other programs like POVRay. Wilbur is freeware http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton/software.html
Ground control is at Digital Carvers Guild. **Wilbur is for PC Other than that, if you go ahead and copy the bmp (or tiff, or tga it doesn't matter) from Bryce, be sure to raise resolution *and* size. Hope this helps Regards

How do I use the DEM files from the USGS? What file format are they since they don't have an extension? I can't seem to get them to work with anything including TerraGen. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me.
TIA EW
