To see a nice example of faked translucency with tree leaves, go to the SHoestring Shaders website http://www.des-web.net/html/samples.html
The problem at the moment is getting a surface to react to cast shadows in a way that allows light to cross a shadow border. You can see in my tutorial in the latest issue of 3dXtract how you can fake a subsurface scatter effect with the curve filter and the shoestring shaders iridescent shader. You can use ShadowGlow to account for cast shadows if its set to -100% but it also cuts off the bleeding of light effect across the shadow border that is part of subsurface scatter (and what my fake emulates).
