Yup, both Xvid and DivX are Mpg4 based, but DivX looks as crappy as your ordinary mpg4 compressed versions. While Xvid can compress the file twice as much with the same level of quality (at least for long files like movies, that's why a movie in DivX is usually two cds while xvid is one, compressing the same data in DivX to one cd would look nasty). So originally they're based on the same thing, but one simply has a better implementation, better than the commercial, extremely expensive mpg4 and for the less expensive DivX. I haven't managed to get 3ivx compression to work, but isn't it for avi only, can't remember.
If you are really interested in codecs you should check out On2 www.on2.com and the VP6.1 (some bug fix or optimization, can't remember) too, as that's some really nice stuff. (Hey look at that, they seem to have released VP7) If only Hd-Dvd or Blu-Ray used some compression like that, mmmm, that would bring a big smile on my face.
And for the "doesn't it depend on what compression is used in qt as well" thing, of course it does, I stated that converting to VP3 compressed QT from uncompressed AVI won't affect it much, would be the same as uncompressed QT to VP3 QT. You can of course do a B/W (1 bit pr. pixel) with compression version to get it really small, but that wouldn't give very good quality, at least I don't think so. ;)
