Carrara doesn't have to change the mesh in order to use it.   Let's
suppose you import in a .obj file.

You will get a pop=up full of options.  One of those options is if you
want you model to come in as a facet mesh or as a vertex mesh.   Facet
is similar to a square primative.  It's not ment to change other than
simply transfomations.  It's reduced in file size and would be fine
for a stationary and otherwise complete & not animated models.

But you want it as a vertex mesh, which at this time makes it for the
VM.  It doesn't add triangulation or anything else to your model,
unlike it would if you converted a facet model into a vertex model.

I think this may be the workflow problem that you are having.  If not,
please give us more details to the settings and exactly how your step
by step workflow suffers?
