Adobe buys Macromedia? 2005-04-18 - By Andrew Turner

I doubt it.
If anything, I believe they'll combine things that can be combined, and leave things alone that work the way they are and can't be... "assimilated" :)
Don't forget SVG.
If Adobe saw Macromedia as a company with valuable assets, why would they simply chop off a large portion of their user base? I think they'll keep things in tact for a while.
That said, I've been using GoLive for a long time but know Dreamweaver is more the standard, and I'd switch if the upgrade price was the same; I think Flash's video capabilites will undoubtedly improve; Illustrator and ImageReady already work pretty well with Flash.
There are a ton of free and cheap relatively unknown 2D vector programs out there that work pretty well; that, with the relative cooling between Apple and Adobe, I don't think the graphics world will suffer at all.

What they will do with it is scuttle most of it.
FreeHand or Illustrator will be scraped. My guess is Illustrator since FreeHand and Fireworks play nice with Flash. GoLive will be history since it competes with Dreamweaver.
Advances in graphics programs will also slow since these two top notch firms have been driving the industry for years.
All in all, this is sad news.
