Splotchy?
I think you may be having a problem with colors that NTSC cannot properly reproduce, if so, then you may need to reconsider the colors that seem to be bad.
However, more details are useful...
Playback method can be critical, playing back through RF (worst), composite (somewhat better), S-video, (typically as good as most get), and component video, which is almost the best unless you go to DVI, which is new, and allows upconversion to HDTV modes...
