This may be the site, I forgot the URL but asked on the poser NG and
they were quick to point me the way :)

There are massive resolution planet maps available here, and by massive
I mean massive
Western Hemisphere 21,600 by 21,600 pixels (1km) (240 MB TIFF)**
Eastern Hemisphere 21,600 by 21,600 pixels (1km) (400 MB TIFF)**
21,600 by 10,800 pixels (170 MB TIFF)**

But they are available in a few different resolutions.

For the one trying to stick to a spherical earth there are
some texture, bump, and specularity maps here:
http://www.visulogik.com/tS/jorden/

I downloaded them originally from a site that I do not remember the url
of any more. They are ok to use freely for private use and may not be
redistributed commercially.

As they ar far too big for tS, I divided them into 8 parts,
so the only problem left is to map them onto a sphere.
The method I used was to split a sphere in 8 parts, then
the default mapping worked, but the edges of the parts got visible.
