You could try Rar'ing them, Rar and Ace are usually better than zip, but you can't be sure, it really depends on the file type. When you zip, rar, ace, bzip or whatnot a file, the compression is lossless, but remember to use highest compression setting, that way it will take slightly longer to compress and decompress (but doesn't really matter unless the files are huge on a modern comp).
Ogg vorbis is another format similar to mp3, but unlike mp3 can legally be encoded without paying for a license because it is developed under the GNU Public License. If an mp3 encoder is free, it usually means you need to have a license yourself to encode the files legally (meaning you have to have bought an encoder with a license), not that most people care though, but considering she is a court reporter she might not want to do anything illegal?
