"soft selection "

"soft selection "

3D Studio Max has a selection mode called "Soft Selection" that lets you
select, for instance, vertices with a "falloff", so that a group of
vertices gets selected completely, and surrounding vertices get selected
partially.  Use the move tool and the vertices in the center of your
selection move more than those on the fringe.  I'm not sure that the
"paint select" tool works the same way, and definitely doesn't seem to
work while editing UV's in Maya.  Does Maya have the equivalent of "soft
selection"?  Thanks!
