I think that I did a tutorial that's applicable in 3dxtract called "shooting the moon". What it covers is how to blend terrains together so that you end up with terrains that have features where you want them, and how to get the edges (more or less) to match.
One important trick is the zero edge filter, and then to put the edge of your terrain below the infinite plain or surrounding terrain that you use as a fill in object.
