Maybe you can adapt it to carrara...

I would try z-scaled metaballs also - maybe together with a complex
shader with fake fresnel as operator for an additional texture to
simulate the "cooled down" edges etc.

To make it really physical correct flowing down the hill could be
difficult - but maybe you can improvise a little bit...
