Mark, on a *mac* I would say spend $30 and buy QuickTime Pro. It's the swiss
army knife
of video, and I use it for dozens of conversion tasks that would be a pill in
an NLE or
AfterEffects: simple cuts/trims, pulling stills, and converting image sequences
into movs,
etc.

On PC however, I know you can still buy QTPro, but it's ability to read/write
avi is limited
by lack of codec support, so it might not be as "universal" of a translator....
Would be
cheaper and simpler than Premiere at least.
