I get uneven results, too.
I'm not sure what the magic password is.  :-)
Sometimes it works fine and other times
it doesn't.

If you draw the opened ended profile for the object
you want to lathe, you can also draw a second line
which will be used for the center of the lathing.
Once drawn, select the profile then release on "Lathe"
in the top menu. You can then click on the other line
and it will lathe.

Make sure the profile and lathing line are on the same
plane. I think it will then work.

I have to tell you that I tend to avoid the lathing command
because there are limited controls for it. I get better results
by using the Spline Modeler and then converting it to a
vertex object so I usually do that instead.
