My first instinct would be to, instead, derive from MPxSurfaceShape. A bit
more work, but the node is then part of Maya's draw request queue, and may
also offer light linking association. Haven't tried it myself, tho';
standard disclaimers; yadda yadda.

Aside: In my (minimal, admittedly) research on this topic, I see there's a
new class in Maya 5's API: MLightLink. Man, I feel so out of the loop being
stuck in Maya 4. :(
