I'm sure the rolling wave motion in that scene was done using Alain Bellon's
DynaWave plugin:

It certainly looks like it to me as the falling sphere even leaves a ripple
on making contact with the 'water surface' which is another of DynWave's
clever tricks.

With a little work it's possible to get a passable rippling surface effect
by animating a 'Deform Object' with an increased lattice resolution on a
quad divided plane, though I can't think of an easy way to make the ripples
roll acros the plane.
