Or how about you can import the vectors as vector objects that can be accessed and inserted into the spline modeller? That way you wouldn't have to choose the correct plane before importing the file, you could import, then drag it from the properties tray, and drop it on the plane you want to use it on. Maybe it could even be made available in the vertex modeller, in which it could be converted into a line segment of vertices, and you could lathe it or loft or whatever.
