Try changing the port numbers to something else. This is in the preferences settings for the main machine and each node. I changed mine from 5020-5060 to 6020-6060 and that seemed to do the trick.
Norton Antivirus 2005 Internet worm protection will also stop the connection.
Make sure your software firewall is allowing carrara and the rendernodes through. I run zonealarm and it needed to know that Carrara and the rendernodes could access the network and act as servers.
I assume that you have broadband and a wireless router. Some routers that do packet state inspection might interfere as well but this would be a last thing to look at.
