Meshes Q.s: Unfolding; Turn curved mesh into squared?

Hi All,

I tired Pepakura for turning 3D meches into things you can cut out and fold
(by printing the pattern onto paper or whatever), but I have a problem I've
been trying to solve but can't figure out how to do so.

Pekajura does not deal well at all with "curved meshes".

What I mean is this:
- when you place a sphere or other solid polygon, the mesh 9if you're using
quads esp.) is "straight";
- after you bend, twist, hollow it out, etc., the mesh's lines are all
"curved".

Pepakura does not do well making a folding-model plan from such "curved"
meshes.

So, what I am wondering is:
(1) is there a way to take a "curved" 3D mesh and convert it to a
"straight" one?
(2) is there another way to "unwrap" a 3D mesh so as to turn it into a
pattern you can print, cut, and fold?

TIA =:-) !
